Interferometric SAR measures phase modulo one cycle, so the raw interferogram wraps: displacement larger than the wavelength folds back on itself. Unwrapping recovers the continuous field, and it is the step where classical algorithms most often fail, particularly across steep gradients and areas of low coherence.

Relevant to subsidence, landslide movement, and deformation around faults and volcanoes.
